Lefebvre Group obtains ISO/IEC 42001 certification for its AI tool GenIA-L

Lefebvre Group, of which Larcier-Intersentia is part, has obtained ISO/IEC 42001:2023 certification for the management system behind GenIA-L, its legal and tax artificial intelligence technology, deployed notably in Belgium. This international recognition reflects several years of technological, editorial and human investment in developing a high-performing, controlled AI designed to meet the specific requirements of legal and tax professionals.

A leading international standard for governing artificial intelligence

ISO/IEC 42001:2023 is the first international standard dedicated to artificial intelligence management systems. It defines the requirements for organisations to establish, implement, maintain and continuously improve the way they develop and use AI.

The certification obtained by Lefebvre Group was issued by BSI and covers three key areas in particular:

  • AI governance;
  • the management of AI-related risks and impacts;
  • the continuous improvement of processes throughout the AI system’s lifecycle.

The certification was awarded to Lefebvre Group for its role as producer, provider and deployer of an artificial intelligence system designed to help professionals access, understand and structure legal information based on authoritative sources.

Years of investment behind GenIA-L

This recognition marks the culmination of several years of work by Lefebvre Group to develop AI technology specifically designed for the legal, tax and regulatory professions. GenIA-L is built around a fundamental principle: combining the power of artificial intelligence with a controlled content environment and strong editorial expertise. Rather than relying solely on the general knowledge embedded in an AI model, the technology draws on verified legal and tax content from the Group’s own corpus, continuously updated and enriched by its editorial teams and network of authors and experts.

Achieving ISO/IEC 42001 certification therefore reflects an investment that goes far beyond the performance of the models themselves. It also encompasses the technological architecture, data and content governance, security, internal processes, risk assessment and the ongoing monitoring of the technology. This combination of subject-matter expertise and technological control lies at the very heart of GenIA-L.

GenIA-L Assistant: AI designed for professionals at work

In Belgium, this technology is made available to professionals notably through GenIA-L Assistant. The tool goes beyond simply finding information: it helps legal and tax professionals query and summarise legal and tax content, analyse their own documents and structure their work within a secure environment. Answers are designed to allow users to trace the information back to the sources used, while customer data is not used to train the models. The aim is to put the capabilities of artificial intelligence at the service of professionals’ day-to-day work, while providing the level of control expected in professions where information quality, confidentiality and traceability are essential.

For the more than 100,000 professionals currently using GenIA-L across Europe, ISO/IEC 42001 certification provides an additional level of assurance: behind the technology lies a structured framework for identifying risks, overseeing how the system operates and continuously improving it in a responsible manner.

For Larcier-Intersentia and Lefebvre Group as a whole, this milestone forms part of a broader ambition: to make trust an integral part of innovation in artificial intelligence and to continue investing in technology capable of meeting professionals’ needs over the long term.
