Description of the vacancy

The (Senior) Legal Counsel Advanced Polymer Solutions, Europe provides timely, accurate and professional legal support to the Advanced Polymer Solutions business segment in Europe and AFME on a wide array of legal topics including commercial law, manufacturing, procurement and supply chain, and this within company guidelines, policies and procedures in order to ensure statutory and regulatory compliance.

The (Senior) Legal Counsel Advanced Polymer Solutions, Europe provides such support independently and engages directly with clients, but seeks guidance and escalates to management as appropriate depending on the importance or risk profile of a specific matter.

The position will report to the regional head of Legal, Advanced Polymer Solutions, Europe and is located in Bornem. This position is open to travel to amongst others the Rotterdam office as well.

Core activities include but are not limited to:

  • Advise on general commercial law issues and manage commercial risk in order to maintain strong customer relationships.
  • Support and advise on legal issues arising from European manufacturing, procurement, and supply chain organizations and manage additional strategic projects.
  • Review, negotiate, draft and advise on a wide array of contracts, including identifying and independently advising internal stakeholders on contractual risks.
  • Develop new and improve the content of existing standard legal templates; ensure compliance of LyondellBasell legal templates with legislative developments and LyondellBasell policies.
  • Advise on real estate matters and operating permits.
  • Handles independently commercial, supply chain and procurement claims or disputes in their area of responsibility and follows up on litigation.
  • Develop and conduct training programs for employees, to transfer knowledge and ensure compliance.
  • Participate in the definition and development of corporate policies, procedures and programs.
  • Manage external counsel, to assist in legal matters that cannot be handled in-house.
  • Follow up on legislative initiatives and developments with potential impact on amongst others Procurement/Supply Chain and Commercial.
  • Actively engage and participate in (legal department) projects that are aimed to help the company achieve its goals.

Profile

  • You hold a Master Degree in Law and you have a minimum of 8 years of experience working as an in-house counsel in a multi-national company or a reputable law firm.
  • You have relevant experience with reviewing, drafting and negotiating various agreements and transactions across Europe and AFME.
  • You have in-depth knowledge and experience. Under general supervision, and in accordance with established procedures, you perform work that is complex and varied in nature, requiring detailed evaluation, originality, or ingenuity.
  • You may partner with cross-functional teams in complex programs or initiatives. You act as a resource for colleagues with less experience; may direct the work of other staff members.
  • You use best practices and knowledge to improve services.
  • You possess and apply a broad knowledge of principles, practices and procedures of Legal risk management to the completion of complex assignments.
  • You work independently; receives minimal guidance.
  • You operate with substantial latitude for unreviewed action or decision.
  • You may oversee the completion of projects including planning; assigning, monitoring and reviewing progress and accuracy of work; evaluating results, etc.
  • You are fluent in English, knowledge of other European language such as Dutch, German, French or Italian is a plus.
