For a Data Management Company in Ghent, LegalUp Talents is looking for a Solo Legal Manager with experience in Business Law, fluent in Dutch & English

Our client helps companies make more data more deployable and thereby boost the data economy. They facilitate complex challenges in data technology, new data-driven ecosystems, and cross-sector innovation.

As Legal Manager, you are the strategic and operational compass for Legal & Compliance within the company. You combine proven experience as an in-house lawyer with a strong sense of ownership: you further build out the legal framework, steer priorities and risks, and ensure that cooperation with internal stakeholders and external partners remains legally robust and workable.

You act as a sparring partner to management, safeguard the legal quality of decisions, and translate legislation and regulations into clear policies, processes, and concrete actions.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Strategic legal advice & management support
    • Advise executive/management team
    • Act as legal sparring partner on complex files and projects
    • Proactively assess legal implications of new initiatives
    • Contribute public law expertise; initiate and realize decree-level amendments where relevant
    • Develop and monitor legal roadmap
    • Act as Secretary to the Board of Directors
  • Ownership of Legal & Compliance governance
    • Take end responsibility for the Legal & Compliance framework
    • Organize workable governance with stakeholders: decision-making, escalation paths, compliance safeguards
    • Monitor legislative changes
  • Contract management & negotiations
    • Lead and support contract negotiations with suppliers and partners
    • Develop standards and playbooks
    • Safeguard consistency in contract quality, risk acceptance, decision levels and exception management
  • Public law & government context
    • Contribute public law expertise; initiate and realize decree-level amendments where relevant
    • Advise on files with a public/government context
  • External counsel & disputes
    • Manage cooperation with external lawyers and legal partners
    • Coordinate disputes and escalations; safeguard legal strategy, case build-up and internal communication
  • Legal enablement: knowledge, training & process improvement
    • Build and maintain legal knowledge base
    • Deliver pragmatic awareness sessions and short trainings for stakeholders
    • Professionalize legal operations

MUST HAVE

  • Master's degree in Law
  • 7+ years of experience as an in-house lawyer, with a strong contract practice & stakeholder management
  • Fluent in Dutch & English
  • Legal sharpness combined with pragmatism: you make complex matters decidable and workable
  • Ability to take autonomous ownership and prioritize, while collaborating in a broad stakeholder environment

NICE TO HAVE

  • Affinity with data/IT/security or regulatory domains in digital environments
  • Experience in or with a government context (public sector, agencies, intergovernmental cooperation)
  • Experience with or affinity for public procurement /framework agreements and helping embed processes and risks organization-wide (procedure choice, award criteria, documentation, follow-up, disputes)
  • French knowledge
