You know these new steel bridges over the Ring Road in Zaventem? Maybe you’ll be driving soon over the Rhine Bridge in Leverkusen (Germany)? Surely you have heard of new offshore wind farms in the North Sea before our Belgian coast, but also in the Netherlands, France, Scotland and even in Japan. Well, all of this is the wonderful work of Smulders, an international steel construction company with over 1,400 employees, with a proven track record in the engineering, construction, supply and assembly of heavy, technical complex and architectonic steel constructions.

Active in the Civil & Industry and Offshore Wind market, Smulders combines its passion for steel with an extensive expertise enabling it to bring unique products to the market.


To deliver on its ambitions and current growth, Smulders is currently looking for a Corporate Legal Counsel to join its team! Smulders is searching for curious and entrepreneurial people who are passionate about working together to deliver on its main goal "to make our client's wishes reality".

As Corporate Legal Counsel you will assist Smulders in various legal areas. Thanks to your broad legal knowledge, you can count on an extensive and varied range of tasks. 

Your permanent base of operations will be Iemants in Arendonk, but you are also prepared to work at other Smulders sites when necessary. 

In addition, you will also be called in sporadically for short business trips all over Europe within the framework of great construction projects.

What would you do?

  • You analyze public and private tender documents and identify all possible legal aspects (contractual and extra-contractual risks, liabilities, ...). You then advise on these issues.
  • Negotiate and draft all kinds of commercial contracts (construction contracts, engineering contracts, joint venture contracts, subcontracts, pre-bid, NDAs, ...). You also analyze insurance requirements and risks.
  • You provide practical legal advice on a wide range of legal questions related to all Smulders' activities.  Provide sound level of legal advice and supervise all tenders in Benelux.
  • Disputes involving Smulders, you manage. This ranges from the follow-up of processes and contacts with external counsel, to negotiating settlements.
  • Management of insurance claims. 

What does our ideal candidate look like?

  • Masters in Belgian Law
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in an international business environment and/or law firm (preferably with subsequent in-house experience).
  • Sound experience in drafting and negotiating (international) contracts. 
  • Excellent legal drafting skills.
  • Experience in public tendering and/or construction and/or energy law is a plus.
  • Experience in long term and high value projects environment is a plus.

  • Ability to work within the set timescales and urgency of legal matters.
  • Well-developed ability to understand and handle complex legal and operational issues.
  • Demonstrate sound legal reasoning.
  • Strong commercial acumen.
  • Excellent drafting and negotiation skills are among his/her core assets, along with a pronounced ability to deal with peers and professionals of diverse disciplines and backgrounds.
  • Willingness to take initiatives, responsibilities and challenge others. 
  • Good inter-personal and communications skills. 
  • Integrity, sound judgement and assertive personality. 
  • Excellent command of English (negotiating and drafting); knowledge of Dutch is preferable; knowledge of French is a plus.
