Op de benadeelde rust de plicht om de door hem opgelopen schade – in de mate van het mogelijke –  te beperken. De schadebeperkingsplicht houdt in dat de benadeelde verplicht is alle maatregelen te nemen welke van een “redelijk en voorzichtig persoon” kunnen verwacht worden om de omvang van de schade in te dijken. De schadelijdende partij die tekortschiet in zijn schadebeperkingsplicht zal het gedeelte van de schade dat met naleving van deze plicht vermeden zou zijn, niet kunnen verhalen op degene die de schade heeft veroorzaakt.
