The European Investment Bank was created by the Treaty of Rome in 1958 as the long-term lending bank of the European Union. The task of the Bank is to contribute towards the integration, balanced development and economic and social cohesion of the EU Member States.

The EIB, the European Union's bank, is seeking to recruit for its Legal Directorate (JU) - EU Operations Department (OPS-EU) - Spain and Portugal Division (ESPT) at its headquarters in Luxembourg: TRAINEE

Duration: 5 months (fixed start date: 1st March 2026)

(With possible extension up to 6 months if required by University)

Objective of the traineeship 

To provide you with hands-on experience in legal operations related to EIB projects in Spain and Portugal, while supporting the Division’s mission and contributing to the Bank’s strategic objectives.

Responsibilities 

Under the oversight of the team members responsible for specific areas, you will be expected to perform the following main tasks: 

  • Monitor legal and market developments in Spain and Portugal, prepare briefings and knowledge materials.
  • Support legal analysis and documentation for lending operations. 
  • Assist in the review and drafting of contracts and other legal documents such as waiver and amendments. 
  • Assist in the analysis of the compliance of conditions precedents to disbursements. 
  • Participate in team meetings and collaborative projects.

Academic qualifications and professional skills 

  • Final year of studies or university degree in law from a Member State of the European Union, preferably with specialization in banking law, corporate law, EU law, environmental law, or other relevant areas. 
  • Knowledge of the EIB’s mission, institutional set-up and activities. 
  • Ability to draft, analyse and report coherently in relation to legal issues. 
  • Training in and knowledge under the relevant national legal system of contract law, civil responsibility, company and commercial law. 
  • Being familiar with the use of AI tools (such as Copilot) would be an advantage. 
  • Knowledge of banking law would be an advantage.
  • Excellent knowledge of standard Microsoft Office tools (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint). 
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English. Spanish or Portuguese is a distinct advantage.
