Loyens & Loeff bids farewell to three former partners who reached firm´s mandatory retirement age

Firm invests in future and new talent

Brussels, 19 January 2009 – The leading business law firm Loyens & Loeff announces the departure of three former partners. Roel Nieuwdorp, Carl Bevernage and Wilfred Goris have reached the firm´s mandatory retirement age and are starting their own firm.

Loyens & Loeff was well-prepared for this departure and in recent years has already taken steps to assure its rejuvenation and reinforcement.

After a career at De Bandt, van Hecke & Lagae, the three lawyers helped Loyens & Loeff to become (as?) the largest law firm in the Benelux. On the basis of their respective expertise, they played an important role in putting the firm on the national and international map. The three had already resigned earlier as partners.
As of 1 January 2009 they had all attained the firm´s mandatory retirement age and decided to set up their own firm in order to remain professionally active. No other lawyers from Loyens & Loeff are joining them.

Investing in talent

Their departure will have no impact on the functioning of Loyens & Loeff. In recent years the firm has actively worked to attract and cultivate new top talent and had prepared itself for the departure long in advance. Paving the way for the younger generations  and rejuvenation remain a major priority in which the office is actively investing, as demonstrated by the appointment in December of 7 new partners in various Loyens & Loeff offices. The Vacature Award 2008 which recently crowned the recruiting campaign is another major indication.

Peter Callens, Managing Partner of Loyens & Loeff Belgium, explains: “We thank Roel Nieuwdorp, Carl Bevernage and Wilfred Goris for their very highly-appreciated contribution to the success of Loyens & Loeff, and warmly congratulate them on their new challenge. We are convinced that our strong ties will also lead to occasions for productive cooperation in the future.
In today´s demanding and rapidly-evolving market of the legal profession, it is vitally important for us to invest in the rejuvenation and succession of partners. This is not something that can be done overnight, but rather must be undertaken as an orderly process, and with the collaboration of all colleagues and employees.”

In 2008 Loyens & Loeff was proclaimed Belgian Law Firm of the Year by the International Financial Law Review (IFLR). In addition, the firm received the Client Choice 2008 Award, attributed by the International Law Office.
Loyens & Loeff also holds first place in terms of the number of transactions in the Mergermarket Benelux League Tables of 2008 which were published earlier this month.
