ClauseBase, a bootstrapped Leuven-founded legal technology company that has quietly grown into one of Belgium’s most successful and internationally recognised legal tech pioneers, was acquired by LawVu, the global AI-powered workspace for in-house legal teams.
The transaction marks a significant milestone for Belgian technology entrepreneurship. Founded in 2019 by three former lawyers, Maarten Truyens, Senne Mennes and Robbert Jacobs, ClauseBase built a global customer base and achieved rapid international growth, without ever raising external capital. The company remained 100% founder-owned until the acquisition.
A Belgian pioneer in legal tech
Long before legal technology became a widely discussed growth sector, ClauseBase was already developing advanced software to automate, standardise, and improve legal drafting and contract review. Built from first-hand experience in legal practice, the platform was designed to tackle the inefficiencies of complex legal work, years before AI-driven legal tools entered the mainstream.
From its base in Leuven, ClauseBase expanded internationally while maintaining a strong Belgian footprint. Its client portfolio includes major Belgian institutions such as Belfius, Fluxys and KU Leuven, alongside international organisations including Merck, AXA, Olympus and the European Commission — as well as the largest and most prestigious law firms of Luxembourg, Germany, Australia and the United Kingdom.
Growth without external capital
ClauseBase’s inclusion in the 2025 Deloitte Fast 50, ranking #27, underlines its position as one of Belgium’s fastest-growing technology companies. What sets the company apart is that this growth was achieved entirely without venture capital or external investors, at a time when the broader tech sector has become heavily dependent on large funding rounds.
The company was founded by Maarten Truyens, Senne Mennes and Robbert Jacobs, former seasoned attorneys, who translated daily frustrations from legal drafting and reviewing into a scalable technology platform used by legal teams across Europe and beyond.
Strategic combination with LawVu: a one of a kind drafting-plus-workflow suite
Through the acquisition, ClauseBase becomes part of LawVu’s global legal software platform, which serves legal teams across multiple continents. ClauseBase brings unparalleled capabilities for drafting, redlining, analysing, and re-drafting contracts and other legal documents at scale. LawVu, meanwhile, is the global leader in workflow software for legal teams, providing unified tools for intake, matters, contracts, documents, spend management, and collaboration.and contract operations software.
Together, they eliminate the fragmented “single-function tool” landscape legal teams often face. Instead, legal professionals gain a seamless, AI-native environment in which work can be created, managed, reviewed, negotiated, and tracked from one secure platform; a unique drafting-plus-workflow suite.
