Van Bael & Bellis is pleased to announce the promotion of competition law specialist Catherine Gordley and corporate and M&A specialist Hannelore Matthys to Counsel.

Catherine specialises in representing clients before the European Commission in complex merger proceedings as well as in antitrust investigations.

Catherine has extensive experience in merger control, including assisting clients in developing remedies as well as navigating Phase II proceedings. Catherine also routinely advises clients on European dominance, pricing, and distribution issues. She has experience representing clients before the European Commission in antitrust investigations relating to Art. 101 and 102 TFEU, from both the complainant and defendant’s side.

Catherine commented on her promotion: “I look forward to continuing my career with Van Bael and Bellis in this new role. I am honoured to be part of one of the premier competition practices in Brussels and to work alongside such talented lawyers.”

Porter Elliott, co-head of the firm’s renowned competition law practice, says: “Catherine is an immensely skilled and business-savvy competition lawyer with a seemingly limitless work ethic. I am delighted at her promotion, which is a logical next step in her very promising career.”

Before joining Van Bael & Bellis, Catherine worked in the New York office of a major international law firm.

Hannelore has extensive experience in Belgian and cross-border M&A transactions (both private and public), private equity and venture capital transactions, corporate (re)structuring and joint ventures. She has assisted sellers, buyers as well as management in a variety of sectors, including renewable energy, insurance, pharmaceuticals, agriculture and the food industry. She also has particular experience in handling complex distressed restructuring and insolvency matters.

Hannelore’s promotion within Van Bael & Bellis is recognition of the firm’s commitment to continue strengthening its leading independent transaction services pillar.

Hannelore commented on her promotion: “I am grateful to my colleagues and the partnership for this recognition. Over the years, I have seen our team going from strength to strength to become a leading independent. I am proud to be part of this growing and ambitious team, now in a new role with new responsibilities.”

Michel Bonne, head of our transaction services team, is very pleased with the promotion of Hannelore: “Hannelore truly enjoys the thrill of transactions. Clients love working with her, not only because she is technically outstanding, but also because she takes an active lead on transactions and, on top of it all, is such a pleasant person to work with. We look forward to many more years with her, as she has a bright future ahead.”
