For its legal team based in Brussels, Solvay is looking for an experienced Lead Lawyer Purchasing.

You will report to the General Counsel Corporate and Industrial Affairs and you will be based in Brussels.

You are a senior legal expert in the domain of purchasing and will be responsible for ensuring high quality legal advice for all purchasing activities.

You will have a transversal responsibility for managing legal affairs globally for the Purchasing function.

You will work closely with the Corporate Purchasing Officer of the Solvay Group and the Purchasing Domain Directors.

You will be involved in the confidential strategic files of the Purchasing Function.

You will lead and animate a network of purchasing lawyers in the different countries and work with them in close collaboration to be able to provide high quality legal advice on purchasing matters in the different zones (North America, EMEA, Asia Pacific and Latin America).

The role of the Lead Lawyer Purchasing will include direct interactions with the Region General Counsels, the General Counsel Corporate and Industrial Affairs, and other senior corporate counsels (such as the Competition Law General Counsel and the Chief Compliance Officer).

You will be supported by a lawyer responsible for purchasing matters in EMEA.

Your responsibilities in this role, will be the following:

  • To provide legal guidance and legal opinions in all matters and questions related to purchasing activities.
  • To ensure compliance with laws and regulations.
  • To ensure compliance with corporate governance and compliance policy.
  • To provide legal advice for strategic projects conducted by the Purchasing Function such as supplier financing programs and to assist in negotiating and drafting the legal documentation for transactions.
  • To draft, review and validate global (worldwide) purchase agreements (purchase of raw materials, industrial equipment, industrial services, logistics, maintenance, general expenses…).
  • To negotiate with third party suppliers complex purchasing agreements independently or with the purchasing team.
  • To elaborate with the network of purchasing lawyers and with the management of the Purchasing Function templates of agreements and general terms and conditions.
  • To assist in the development of Group policies, procedures and guidelines for the Purchasing Function.
  • To implement and follow up on the Group policies, procedures and guidelines though the network of purchasing lawyers.
  • To draft, review and negotiate with the management of the Purchasing Function legal documents, such as powers of attorney, articles of association for companies or A(I)SBL within the domain of purchasing.
  • To organize and run training programs and information sessions for members of the Purchasing Function on legal matters.
  • To lead litigation in the domain of global purchasing agreements.
  • To participate in Leadership Team meetings of the Purchasing Function on a case by case basis.
  • To manage relationships with outside counsels.
  • To assist in drafting the approval notes to the COMEX for purchasing matters.

  • Master’s degree in law and sound knowledge of Belgian law
  • Minimum 10 years of experience as in-house legal counsel or lawyer, preferably in an international environment within major international industrial groups
  • Legal experience in different fields, with a specific focus on contract and liability law
  • Fluent in English and French
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact with business contacts and internal lawyers’ network
  • Strong communicating skills
