Acquiring Belgian nationality becomes more difficult

On 9 October, the Belgian government has taken the decision to strengthen the requirements for acquiring Belgian nationality. As a result, Belgian nationality law is soon to be adapted.

Under the new requirements, foreigners wishing to acquire Belgian nationality will in any case have to be in possession of an unlimited residence permit. Furthermore, they will have to prove that they have genuine ties with Belgium. Conditions for being naturalised by the Chamber of Representatives are also affected. A foreigner wishing to acquire Belgian nationality through naturalisation will have to be in possession of an unlimited residence permit and have had his main place of residence in Belgium for a continuous period of at least five years (instead of three). He/She will have to demonstrate sufficient knowledge of at least one of the national languages and prove that he/she actively contributes to community life in Belgium.
