Thomas Janssens appointed to lead Freshfields’ global antitrust practice

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP (‘Freshfields’) has appointed Thomas Janssens as practice group leader of its global antitrust, competition and trade group.  He takes over from David Broomhall and Martin Klusmann.

Thomas has been a partner at Freshfields for twelve years, and has served as Brussels office managing partner and head of our Brussels antitrust group for the last four.  His market-leading practice focusses on EU and international transactions, which often raise complex cross-border issues or involve parallel investigations before regulatory authorities around the globe.  He will maintain this important client-facing role alongside his new management responsibilities.

Commenting on his appointment, Thomas said “It's both a challenge and an honour to lead an exceptional team with established recognition as the world's leading antitrust practice.  This success lies in our collaborative approach in consistently delivering the best client service - globally.  Martin and David have done a remarkable job and are handing over a team that excels in helping our clients manage the challenges they face in today's changing world.  I look forward to working with colleagues across the firm to apply our energy, thought leadership and values to stay on top of our game.”

David and Martin commented “Thomas is a great lawyer, strategist and motivator of people; we wish him every success in the new role and are confident that the group will continue to go from strength to strength under his leadership.

Freshfields’ global antitrust practice offers unrivalled expertise in international, EU and national competition law.  The group consists of a highly integrated team of leading practitioners in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the US.  The group has more than 50 partners and 300 lawyers covering all aspects of competition law, including M&A, cartel investigations, abuse of dominance, follow-on damages claims as well as stand-alone litigation, State aid and international trade law.
