New high-profile hire confirms Liedekerke’s leading position in international arbitration

Belgian law firm Liedekerke Wolters Waelbroeck Kirkpatrick is pleased to announce the hire of Gabriele Ruscalla as Senior Associate within the International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution practice.

Previously Counsel of the Italian-Swiss team at the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce, Dr Ruscalla will complement one of the largest arbitration teams in Belgium. He will assist on matters involving corporate clients, States and State-owned entities in both international commercial arbitration and investment arbitrations, conducted under the ICSID, UNCITRAL, ICC, and LCIA Rules.

Arnaud Nuyts, Head of the IADR practice comments: “We are thrilled and honoured to have such an esteemed arbitration practitioner join our team. His extensive knowledge and experience will bolster the firm’s International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution practice and will be a tremendous asset to our clients”.

Andrea Carlevaris, Former ICC Court’s Secretary General and partner at BonelliErede commented: “I had the good fortune of working with Gabriele at the ICC Secretariat for four years. He is a sharp legal mind, detail-oriented and, importantly, a most pleasant colleague. Moreover, he brings to Liedekerke a large network of contacts he created during his years at the Secretariat. Gabriele is a great addition to the firm’s international arbitration team.”

Anyone who had the pleasure of interacting with Gabriele during his time at the ICC, will have been impressed by his rigorous legal analysis, thoughtful comments and people skills.  I have no doubt that he will thrive in his new position.” added Professor Dr. Maxi Scherer, Special Counsel at WilmerHale and Professor of Law at Queen Mary University of London.

While at the ICC, I met a great number of lawyers from law firms all over the world. When I decided to take the plunge and return to private practice, I identified the law firms which interested me the most in terms of structure, cases, business development, regional interests, etc. Liedekerke ticked all the boxes of my ‘checklist’: clients in industries in which I have a lot of interest, a strong international footprint steadily increasing, a fantastic team of incredibly talented and dynamic young lawyers led by two very well-known arbitration practitioners with a vast experience in the field.” said Gabriele Ruscalla.

Prior to his role at the ICC, Gabriele held a position as a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Dispute Resolution and Public International Law of the Max Planck Institute for International, European and Regulatory Procedural Law. He carried out research in international arbitration (investment and commercial) and dispute settlement mechanisms in other areas of international law.

Earlier on in his career, he worked as an associate at a global law firm in Paris, in the International Arbitration Group, for almost three years.

Gabriele regularly teaches international arbitration and international law in several universities and publishes articles and notes on international arbitration-related subjects.

Gabriele holds a PhD in International Law & Economics from the Università Bocconi in Milan. He defended his thesis “Transnational Public Policy and International Arbitration: How to Secure the Integrity of the Arbitral Legal Order" in 2015. Previously, he obtained a Research Master in Global Business Law and Governance, organised by the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, Columbia Law School and Sciences PO Paris, under the aegis of the Alliance Programme (2010). He also completed a Master in International Relations (specialisation in International Law) from the University of Milan (2008). He is a member of the Paris Bar (Avocat à la Cour).
