Conference on "Trade Defence Instruments"

Start:  26 Oct 2018 09:40

End: 26 Oct 2018 17:15

The Institute for European Studies (IES) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) kindly invites you to participate at a high-level conference on TRADE DEFENCE INSTRUMENTS on Friday 26 October 2018.

In recent months, questions of trade defence have become more and more prominent on the political agenda of Europe. How to deal with China’s claim to be a market economy? How to react to measures of US President Trump on steel and aluminium? How to make the EU’s trade defence instruments more efficient so as to react quickly while respecting due process rights of all interested parties? How to take into account the WTO dimension in EU cases? In order to provide a first-hand analysis and an in-depth discussion with specialists in the field, the VUB has decided to organize a first public conference on the matter: The TDI YEARLY 2018.

Following a key-note introduction of IES President Karel De Gucht, prominent speakers from the European Commission (DG Trade and Legal Service), academia, business associations, and specialised law firms will review the main developments in the field of 2017. This includes legislative changes in the EU's basic regulations, Commission decisions on recent cases, as well as case law from Luxemburg and Geneva.

The programme was designed with the kind help of a steering committee composed of the specialised trade lawyers Renato Antonini, Yves Melin, Bernard O'Connor, Olivier Prost, Edwin Vermulst and Frank Hoffmeister, Professor for International Economic Law at the Institute.
