We are looking for a Group Legal Counsel to join the commercial and business law team within our Legal, IP & Compliance department based in the Ontex corporate headquarters in Aalst (Belgium).

As a member of our Legal, IP & Compliance department you will support the further growth of the Company and help Ontex manage the legal and regulatory risks in the many countries where it has operations or does business.

As a member of the commercial and business law team you will provide the Company’s business divisions and group functions first-class contract, advisory and litigation support and develop state-of-the-art tools and processes. The team also supports the Company’s preventive law strategy and its compliance initiatives in commercial and business law matters.

You will report to the Group General Counsel & Corporate Secretary.

The Position

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Leading all legal aspects of strategic business projects enabling the further growth of the Company (including concluding business partnerships and setting up of greenfield operations);
  • Providing functional support and advice to the Company’s business divisions with respect to commercial and business law matters, with a focus on commercial contracts (sales, distribution, supply/procurement, in- or out-sourcing, IT, real estate, transport and logistics,…) and relevant regulations (consumer protection and trade practices, public procurement, competition, economic sanctions, ABC/AML,…);
  • Provide contract drafting and negotiation and other contract management support in relation to all commercial contracts;
  • Developing and implementing a preventive law and compliance strategy and designing effective and state of the art tools, processes, trainings and policies enabling the Company’s business divisions to operate with a high level of empowerment;
  • Managing litigation and support pre-litigation/complaints handling processes;
  • Keeping abreast of relevant evolutions and developments and managing (network of) outside local counsel in relation to all of the above;
  • Developing and maintaining strong business partner relationships and collaborative model with the stakeholders in the Company’s business divisions and relevant group functions;
  • Develop network of relevant authorities, regulators and other external stakeholders;
  • Contributing to the deployment of best in class tools, processes and systems with respect to legal management.

  • A Master degree in Law from a first rate Belgian or European law school, with high academic credentials; a post-graduate degree at a distinguished academic institution is a plus;
  • At least 5 years of experience as a business lawyer in a reputed law firm and/or in the legal department of a mid-sized or large corporation;
  • Ability to work effectively in an international and multi-cultural environment;
  • Ability to manage complex projects and lead cross-functional project teams;
  • A result-oriented (“can do”) attitude without compromising on quality and integrity and an ability to make sound judgment calls under pressure;
  • Business orientation and commercial awareness combined with solid legal risk management and compliance skills and authority;
  • Clear and effective communication skills;
  • True team player;
  • Experience in the development and implementation of legal management initiatives, driving process improvements, resource efficiencies and change management in provision of legal services;
  • Ability and willingness to effect business travel;
  • Excellent knowledge of English and good knowledge of Dutch and/or French; working knowledge of German and/or Spanish is a plus.
