Bird & Bird's rapidly growing Competition & EU Law team in Brussels is looking to recruit an experienced associate with a passion for EU competition law and a keen interest in EU trade defence law. The associate will work closely with our competition and trade law teams across various EU countries. Knowledge of Dutch and/or German is a significant advantage.

Bird & Bird's ‎Competition & EU Law Group counts more than 50 specialist competition lawyers across our 29 global offices. Our team has significant industry expertise in key sectors of the firm, including communications, IT, aviation, automotive, electronics‎, energy, payments and many others.

Our Competition & EU Law practice deals with high-profile matters in all key fields of EU competition law including cartels, abusive conduct, merger control and State aid. We also have strong experience in EU litigation, having litigated more than 100 cases before the EU courts in Luxembourg.

Our Brussels-based trade team advises clients in all key areas of EU trade law. In particular, the team helps clients navigate anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigations and is currently handling a significant number of high-profile assignments before the European Commission and the European courts.

You will become part of a growing team which is establishing itself in the market as one of the go-to practices in Brussels.

The role
 
  • You will handle cutting-edge competition cases across a broad range of sectors of industry;
     
  • We will also involve you in trade defence cases;
     
  • You will work for international clients, and enjoy challenging work‎;
     
  • You will be given responsibility and have direct client contact; 
     
  • You will be part of a team that enjoys working together and you will get training and feedback from experienced colleagues;

  • You will have an opportunity to take part in various social activities and events of our Brussels office and internationally.

 

We would be interested in hearing from you if you have:

  • Obtained excellent results during your studies at a well-respected EU university; an LL.M. in EU (competition/trade) law is an advantage;
     
  • 5/6 years' solid experience working in the competition practice of a law firm recognised in this field;
     
  • An excellent command of English, both orally and in writing. Knowledge of Dutch and/or German  is a significant advantage; and
     
  • A strong appetite for business development activities.

In addition, we expect you to have:

  • The ability to provide clear, precise and practical advice that helps clients in their day-to-day business;
     
  • The ability to manage all aspects of complex matters;
     
  • The ability to perform under significant time pressure;
     
  • The ability to take initiative and confidence built upon solid success and achievements;
     
  • An interest in working in a team environment with an open, informal and entrepreneurial culture;
     
  • A desire to be working hand-in-hand with members of our internal team as well as other practice groups around the globe, in a truly internationally integrated law firm; and
