Leading International & Indian Law Firms, Clifford Chance and AZB, Form 'Best Friends' Relationship

Clifford Chance and AZB are pleased to announce an agreement to establish a 'best friends' relationship to offer their combined experience to both Indian and international clients.

The arrangement, which takes effect immediately, is the first of its kind between market leaders. It will set a new benchmark for the delivery of legal services on transactions involving international businesses investing in India or Indian businesses investing or raising capital or finance internationally.

Clifford Chance global managing partner, David Childs said, "AZB is one of the most highly regarded law firms in India and our new working relationship, combining the global reach of the Clifford Chance network and the expertise of AZB in the Indian market, will enable us to provide our clients with the service they need."

"Our ambition is to provide our clients with access to the very best Indian expertise. This is a logical development of our growing Indian practice, which has been advising clients on Indian related matters for over fifty years and we look forward to developing a long lasting relationship with AZB in the future."

Clifford Chance senior partner, Stuart Popham commented, "It is an increasing challenge for both Indian and international clients seeking cross-border advice that they still have to look outside the country to access the requisite experience, resources and expertise. This arrangement will allow our two firms to offer the best possible service within the current regulatory restrictions."

In the reciprocal arrangement, Clifford Chance will refer work to be carried out in India to AZB, with AZB referring work to Clifford Chance to be handled in its international network. AZB will have access to Clifford Chance's global reach, client service standards and technical expertise, and Clifford Chance will have access to AZB's Indian expertise and experience. The firms will work together to provide clients with an unrivalled service.

AZB’s senior partners, Ajay Bahl, Zia Mody and Bahram Vakil commented, "As the speed of India’s integration into the global economy quickens, our law firms have to keep in step. Our lawyers are second to none and once linked into international best practices and training, they will be an even stronger force both for the firm and our clients."

It is the aim of both firms to move towards a closer association when the regulations permit.
